Home Fire Safety – Smoke Alarms

What is a smoke alarm?

A smoke alarm is an essential part of home fire safety. It is a device that detects smoke and sounds an alarm. It is much more than a smoke detector which only detects smoke and has no alarm.

Why have smoke alarms in the home?

It is compulsory for smoke alarms to be installed in residential properties in Queensland. A smoke alarm could save your life and is an important part of fire safety and prevention in the home.  They provide early warning signs and will protect your family and property. Properly maintained smoke alarm saves lives. It is as simple as that.

Qld Fire and Rescue recommends that a smoke alarm be installed in every room.

Smoke Alarms - 2 choices

240 volt smoke alarms with battery back up are connected to your home’s electrical system and need to be installed by a qualified Electrical Contractor.

We recommend having your smoke alarms interconnected to provide the maximum level of protection – all smoke alarms sound off simultaneously if one alarm is activated ensuring all members of the household are alerted.

9 volt smoke alarms are operated by battery only. Although 9 volt alarms can be legally installed by the home handyman they still need to be maintained regularly to ensure that the battery is charged and the alarm working properly.

Only some 9 volt battery operated smoke alarms can be interconnected. Be sure to ask when purchasing.

Two Types of Smoke Alarms

Photoelectric smoke alarms (also known as optical) “see” the smoke i.e. very good at detecting smouldering fire. Research indicates that this type of alarm is generally more effective than ionization types and are recommended by Queensland Fire and Rescue.

Ionisation smoke alarms detect very small particles of smoke and respond very quickly to hot, flaming fires.

There are also smoke alarms available for deaf and hearing impaired people and special models for kitchens and caravans.
